Smooth is the finish when the block shows grain that deserves daylight. Levon stains in several quiet passes and polishes to a sheen, not a factory gloss. The bowl stays slim. The rings or the birdseye stay readable in the hand and under a lamp.

Ukulele 462/25 is a pale, smooth example from the 2025 archive. Billiard 391/24 and bulldog 381/23 keep the same discipline: Danish tightness, even walls, no extra bulk to hide a weak plateau. If the grain will not carry that honesty, the pipe is not forced smooth — it is rusticated or blasted instead.
How it smokes
The finish does not change the drilling. Chamber and airway are set before the stain. A smooth Asikyan is still an engineer’s pipe: draught hole, button, and balance come first. The polish is the last quiet pass, not the point of the work.
