Where it comes from
The tomato is a Danish mid-century silhouette: take an apple, flatten it, widen it, keep it low. Lists sometimes say “squashed tomato.” It belongs with the pot and the Eskimo as a palm pipe rather than a tall English bowl. Ivarsson’s generation made the low wide bowl respectable; factories later copied the outline. It is not a ukulele (the ukulele keeps more height) and not a bullmoose (no Rhodesian taper required).
The specification
Bowl: wide, low, flattened. Shank: short, often straight or softly bent. 419/24 is the tomato here: smooth, glossy, a thin black-and-white junction ring. No millimetre card. The plate reads broader in the hand than 423/24’s apple and shorter in the pocket than a Lovat.
When to choose it
If you want a short pipe that sits like a stone in the palm, start with the tomato and then look at the Eskimo and the ukulele. 419/24 is the Asikyan tomato — one pipe, 2024, Hand Made.
